Menopause books worth your time

There are hundreds of menopause books; most recycle the same chapters. This shelf is deliberately short: every title is by a named clinician, researcher or established health writer, and each entry says who the book actually suits. No affiliate links, and nobody paid to be here.

The Menopause Manifesto

Dr Jen Gunter, OB/GYN · 2021

The evidence-first primer. Systematically separates what research supports from what marketing claims, with a running intolerance for products sold on fear. Suits readers who want the science straight and referenced.

The New Menopause

Dr Mary Claire Haver, OB/GYN · 2024

A practical toolkit organised symptom by symptom, from a clinician with a large following. Suits readers who want an actionable reference to bring into appointments rather than a narrative read.

Estrogen Matters

Avrum Bluming, MD and Carol Tavris, PhD · updated 2024

The book-length case for re-examining the fear of hormone therapy that followed the 2002 WHI study. Opinionated by design — read it alongside mainstream guidance, not instead of it. Suits readers weighing an HRT decision who want the strongest version of the argument.

What Fresh Hell Is This?

Heather Corinna · 2021

Irreverent, inclusive and honest about the parts other books skip — written for everyone the pastel menopause aisle ignores, including queer, trans and nonbinary readers. Suits anyone allergic to the wellness tone.

The Menopause Brain

Dr Lisa Mosconi, neuroscientist · 2024

What the transition actually does to the brain, from a researcher who images it for a living. The best single answer to "is the brain fog real?" (yes, and it is usually temporary). Suits readers whose main symptoms are cognitive.

Next Level

Dr Stacy Sims, exercise physiologist, with Selene Yeager · 2022

Training, fuelling and performance through perimenopause and beyond, for women who exercise seriously and noticed the old rules stopped working. Suits athletes and lifters more than casual movers.

No affiliate links, no sponsorships, and inclusion is not an endorsement of every claim an author makes — several of these disagree with each other, which is rather the point.
