Menopause age calculator

The average age of natural menopause in the United States is 51 to 52, and most people reach it between 45 and 55. Only two personal factors have solid evidence for shifting that timing: the age your mother reached menopause — family history explains roughly half the variation — and smoking, which is associated with menopause one to two years earlier. This calculator uses exactly those factors and nothing invented, and returns a window rather than a date, because a date would be a lie.

Common questions about menopause timing

What is the average age of menopause?

51 to 52 in the United States, defined as the point 12 months after the final period. Around 5% of women reach it before 45 (early menopause), and about 1% before 40 — primary ovarian insufficiency, which always deserves specialist care promptly rather than a wait-and-see approach.

Can any test tell me exactly when menopause will happen?

No. Hormone levels fluctuate too much during the transition to date it, and even specialised markers like AMH only sharpen the estimate modestly. Family history remains the most useful everyday predictor — which is why it is one of only two inputs here.

When do symptoms start relative to this age?

Usually several years earlier. Perimenopause — cycle changes plus symptoms — begins on average around four years before the final period, and sometimes eight or more. If symptoms are what brought you here, how long perimenopause lasts and the symptom self-check are the more useful pages.

What doesn't change the age of menopause?

Most of the things people assume: age at first period, number of pregnancies, and hormonal contraception have little to no proven effect on timing. The pill can mask the transition by regulating bleeding, but it does not postpone menopause itself.
