Thyroid symptom check

Thyroid disease and menopause produce overlapping symptoms — fatigue, weight change, mood change, poor sleep, hair loss — and thyroid disease peaks in women of exactly this age. The distinguishing features are directional: an underactive thyroid causes cold intolerance, constipation and weight gain, an overactive one causes heat intolerance, palpitations and weight loss. Neither is diagnosed by symptoms. A TSH blood test settles it in days.

This is the single most useful test to rule out before attributing midlife symptoms to hormones. Thyroid disease is common, it peaks in women around this age, and its symptom list overlaps the menopause list almost completely.

The check below sorts your answers towards under- or overactive patterns. It cannot diagnose either — only a blood test can, and it is cheap, quick and widely available.
