How to get a referral to a menopause specialist
Whether you need a referral depends on where you are and what insurance you hold. In much of the US you can book a specialist directly, though HMO plans usually require a referral from a primary care physician for coverage. In the UK, NHS specialist menopause services are accessed through a GP referral, while private clinics can generally be booked directly.
In the US
PPO plans typically allow direct booking. HMO and some managed plans require a primary care referral before they will cover the visit, so the question to ask your insurer is whether a referral is needed for coverage, not whether one is needed to be seen.
In the UK and Ireland
NHS menopause clinics are accessed via GP referral, and availability varies considerably by area. If a GP is reluctant, asking specifically for a referral to a menopause specialist, with your symptom record and its impact on daily life, is more effective than a general request for help. Private clinics do not usually require a referral.
If the referral is refused or the wait is long
Ask what the reasoning is and record it. Ask whether another clinician in the same practice has a menopause interest. And in the meantime, telehealth is often available far sooner than a specialist clinic appointment.
